Tour De Isle of Wight

Sunday the 7th of July saw the clubs annual trip to the Isle of Wight.  The 65 mile  route (shown below) was successfully completed despite the weather, which consisted of a mixed bag of cloud, rain, wind, and driving mist.

But even the weather didn't dampen the sprits of the 18 riders who circumnavigated the island at a fairly leisurely pace..

The route started at Yarmouth and followed the green dotted line clockwise around the island.

Plenty of refreshments stops were in order the first of which was at Ventor.  Most of the riders were more than glad to take a break at this stage with a hot plate of beans on toast and a cup of tea.  The weather so far was more reminiscent of a mid winter ride and with the intimidating Blackgang hill behind them the riders pressed on towards Shanklin. then Sandown.  By the time we arrived at Bembridge  the rain and drizzle had subsided to just cloud which gave us the opportunity to enjoy a cup of tea and the world's driest fruit cake on the patio of a seafront cafe.

Next stop was East Cowes via Ryde and after a short hop across the ferry we all crammed in a couple of energy bars to help us along the home run to Yarmouth.  The faster riders seemed to mistake this last stretch for a time trial and powered on to their favorite cafe in Yarmouth for several milkshake smoothies and a long sit down while they waited for us mere mortals to catch up!

Once back on the mainland Nigel Winchester kindly provided several creates of peaches which were devoured hungrily.  As well as providing the fruit, thanks must go to Nigel for the use of his transit van used to transport all the bikes to the island. Finally thank you to Chris Hunt for organizing the event.
