Sid Valley Cycling Club has been part of the East Devon cycling scene for over 15 years and caters for all abilites of rider. We have regular social road rides at a steady pace, and brisker regular training rides for those looking to get the miles in! Those who prefer to get dirty on their rides are also well catered for with our off-road Cyclo-cross sections. Take a look at our rides page for more information.

Final Stage

2nd June

Morning spent in busy SETE; working French port, market, old fishing quarter. Leisurely time spent navigating inland lagoons on SETE MONTPELLIER cycle paths; quite beacharea. Roll into MONTPELLIER very busy; vibrant centre, music festival in flow, a real young peoples place. Hostel in state of restoration; so short spell of sightseeing,very agreeable menu du jour.

The final km total: 1236, to St ROCH stsation. Comfortable TGV to Paris..... and rain!!! Final leg to Le Harve having crossed Prais on Metro; sunny evening to set up on our way home.

A wonderful experience on the bike; no question, the best way to see France off the beaten track.

We would like to thank our timekeepers, Peter Luxton and Rosemary Cloak, and all the club marshals for helping on the evening. Thanks too to our assistants in the kitchen back at HQ for serving the refreshments. We were helped out this year by Feniton Bowls Club who kindly made their clubhouse available as our venue.

Congratulations to all the prize winners on their success, and to all other participants for their interest and support in our event. Grateful thanks also to John and Jean Mallett for attending for the presentation of the Richard Mallett shield.

We look forward to seeing you all on the S26R/10 course next year.

Ron & Andrew 'do' France for Cancer Research PDF Print E-mail

Sid Valley cyclists, Ron Clint and Andrew Seddon, take on a coast-to-coast challenge this summer in true Gallic style. The cycle tour, starting on 21 June, will take ten days in the saddle leaving from the Channel port of Le Havre; the riders will cross the Loire Valley, before tackling the edge of the Massif Central and finishing in the Mediterranean city of Montpellier, a distance of some 1000km – for disabled rider, Ron, pedalling on one leg, an extra challenge over some spectacular terrain. Ron and Andrew are raising money for Cancer Research UK and are also being sponsored by local furnishers, Potburys, and the Exeter-based cycle shop, The Bike Shed.

Five Club members took part in the 4th Cat race at Ilton in sunny conditions on 17th April taking part in the Somerset Road Club Criterium staged over 1 hour. Promising junior Johnny Cope also raced in the earlier event.

As is customary in the usual windy conditions the bunch of about 50 racers stayed together for most of the race. Both Tim Heal and Chris Eccles put in a couple of optimistic attacks off the front but to no avail.

 

As the hammer went down after the bell for the last lap the bunch got twitchy which led to a nasty crash involving 5 riders and the bunch became a little fragmented. Chris Eccles was impaired by the crash but managed to get back on terms by the last corner following a detour on the grass verge.

 

Charles Maunder and Andrew Creswell held an excellent position in the bunch throughout the race and battled out the sprint to finish 3rd and 5th respectively. Tim Heal, Chris Eccles and Steve Cope followed in mid bunch just out of the top 10 points places.

It is fast approaching the time of year that Tuesday night training re-starts. The season will start on Tuesday 20th April at 7pm and will run through to 31st August.

Following hard negotiations with the MOD and defence estates over the winter there are now much firmer procedures in place in order to allow us to continue use, please carefully read and follow the details below.

After meeting no-one (!) at the football club at 8.15, I eased up Trow hill and raced across the top aided with a 25mph tailwind to meet the rest of the gang at the layby just past the River Axe. There I met up with Richard Brain, his son, Doug (fresh-faced and enjoying his last day in his twenties) and Seaton's stalwart cyclist, John Hill.
