Social event !!
The Fountain Head Branscombe 2012 Beer festival
Friday 22nd June 2012 6.30PM
Live band , Hog roast & lots of beer !
Meet at sidmouth football club at 6.30p.m , gentle cycle over the hill , few beers then try to cycle back !!!
Recommend mountain bikes or ‘Gasman’ style bike & casual attire
For the more civilized among us I have arranged an 8 seater taxi to pick up from Sidmouth football club at 6.30pm and return from Branscombe at 11.30pm. The cost for the taxi is £50.00 return, so if we get a full taxi that’s approx £6.00 per person return. If more than 8 people are interested in a taxi then the taxi firm said they would do two runs .
If we cant fill the taxi before the 8th June then we may have to cancel the taxi.

Devon Dirt 2012
Geoff Keenan and I arrived at Big Peaks bike shop in Ashburton at 9am to join over 350 other entrants for the Devon Dirt MTB event. Initially sunny, clouds soon arrived and by the time we started, the first shower had arrived. From then on the weather was variable although we missed the worst of the rain.

The outward route took us north east on to Dartmoor via a 3.5km climb out of Bovey Tracey. This was a mixture of road and rocky trail with the main section having an average gradient of 14% and several parts being in excess of 20%. Once on Dartmoor we headed to the first checkpoint at Trenchford Reservoir before circling around the neighbouring reservoirs. After returning to Trenchford, we headed back towards Ashburton via the second major climb at Ullacombe and over Haytor. This part was more wooded with the recent heavy rain turning the tracks to deep mud. Arriving at the finish we were grateful to find bike washing facilities, which many of the riders were also using to wash themselves!
Overall it was an excellent event, well organized with sufficient good food. The route is varied with the terrain being challenging in parts. Riders are not timed but the 57km takes about 4 hours to complete. There is also a shorter option, cutting out the reservoir section. We can certainly recommend the event and intend to return next year. |

The evening 10 Time Trials are a series of club and open time trials. There is also come and ride events where any riders can have a go without being a club member.
Local cycling clubs CS Dynamo, Sid Valley and Exeter Wheelers take it in turns to run the events. It's a great way to get into competitive cycling; Usual starting time is first rider off at 7pm - however do check the table for any date specific changes (due to evening light)

Giro di Toscana
September 10-17 2011
By Nigel Winchester
After the Pyrenean Raid in 2006 and the Corsica Tour in 2009, Neil Tubbs decided to organise a third trip: a Tour of Italy’s beautiful Tuscany. The ride was a maximum of 929km with a maximum altitude gain of 14,124m. There were several long/short splits for those who wanted more of a relaxed option and, for the first time, a half day on the Tuesday. This was a great idea as the group had chance to have a look around the ancient city of Florence and rest our tired bodies.

The group of 39 (including 8 ladies) was in the majority composed of Sid Valley Cycling Club members, 10 or so medics from the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, 2 Axe Valley Peddlers and 2 CS Dynamo members and a few other keen sportsmen who also cycle. All 39 bikes were dismantled and boxed up 5 days previously and collected by Neil in a hired transit van. Neil and wife Sue had kindly offered to drive the van from Beer to Pisa- a distance of 980km! The journey took a mere 16 hours: very impressive! This was a most generous and time-consuming gesture without which the tour would never have occurred.
